I can't believe Obama wants to bomb to moon. This is just another part of his plan to convert the world into Kenyan Muslim communists.
It'll be like Hitler.
Bomb the Moon!
I'm tempted to go out and buy a 10" telescope for this. How cool would it be to see an explosion on the moon with your very eyes!?

Would it be visible through such lens?

According to that article, the debris will be.

My dad just told me they are going to broad cast it on TV. Which I think is a great idea. And you know what else? NASA should start broadcasting everythign they do and use that money for research.
All in for "Orbital Porn".
Well, according to one astronaut, the fluid shifts in microgravity do result in certain areas of the anatomy being slightly enlarged...
Meh I've already done this dozens of times...
On a serious note. I think it's a colossal waste of money, but it is pretty awesome.

I thought about linking to No War on the Moon! In Defense of the Dark Side of the Moon for an alternative view of the mission. Only people with colonized minds believe these things are positive, or that this type of "progress" can be beneficial to anyone beyond a small circle of exploiter-elites. And, as to be expected, there is no end to the number of those who seek to compensate for their own personal impotence by over-identifying with these grotesque displays of obscene state-corporate power. I decided not to link to it in the op because today it didn't strike me as profoundly as it did when I first read it back in August.
I'd just like to make sure of one thing: Do you sympathise with the views in that article? I'm afraid for your sanity if you do.
Partially, but don't assume that means I've bought into their whole program.
When I first heard about this experiment I didn't question it at all. The idea of bombing the moon to create a plume of dust that could be analyzed for water made scientific sense to me. That article snapped me out of that view for a time. It didn't convince me that the science wasn't sound, but it did give me pause to consider the military aspects of the experiment. I don't want to see the moon become a firing range for orbiting satellite weapons. And the authors do have a point about exploration being a precursor to colonization and exploitation (Russia suspects US plans to monopolise fuel from moon). The moon worship of the last paragraphs of the article was over the top for me, but it did serve to remind me of the long standing importance of the moon in human culture and psychology in a more visceral way than a typical journalistic rundown of that history would have (Our Changing View of the Moon). And while the moon worship may smack of lunacy, those surrealists may simply be in touch with a forgotten truth (Nature, the cure for bad behavior?)
At any rate, here's more on How to Watch NASA's Probe Smack the Moon Friday

First, you're going to need a moderately large telescope, somewhere on the order of at least 10 to 12 inches of aperture. Smaller telescopes will probably not be able to do the job and you will definitely not see anything using binoculars. You'll likely need to use magnifications in the 250 to 500-power range to have a legitimate chance of getting a glimpse of the dim impact plume.
...
I think I'll go check my telescope.

It would be really cool.
The impact is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. EDT. According to this, 2009-10-09 7:00 AM EDT Sunrise. So if you're in New Jersey, in addition to the telescope, you would need to travel westward into the next timezone in order to beat the sunrise.

I thought they already detected water on the moon. (link) What's the point of going ahead with this?

I think they have reason to believe that Osama Bin Laden is hiding in the Daedalus crater.
You guys are so gullible, that stuff about water is clearly just a decoy for the public. It has already been established that the moon is made of cheese.
