during my time here at gamedev (2-months), i have noticed that there are certain levels of programmers that help each other out when one of them runs onto a problem. there are the Level 1 programmers who are beginners and have probably just 1 game under their belt. then there is Level 2 who are better than level 1 who can make complex 2d games like rpgs and side scrollers. there is also Level 3 who are 3D programmers who probably just started 3d programming maybe 2-5 months ago.and probably just mabe their spinning cube demo. then there is level 4, the commercial quality programmers who can make a basic 3d game. finally, due to popular demand, there is level 5, people who have been coding games for the past 5million years since the dayse of DOS, people, who could get hired by ID software or Epic games if they really wanted to, people in short, that we all wanna be like. what level do you think you are, how many games have you made,how long ago did you start? ps, pleese don't brag and also,pleese don't tell me how old you were when u started and how old you are now. X4J this post has no specific purpose, i just wanted to know for no reason in particular. BTW: most people at gamedev are hobbyists so i just wanted to know, how good of a hobbyist you are, you know, like what you can do. i guess im a level2 i have been programming games for 2 months now. i have made 1 game and i am working on a second.

Ive been a level 2 programmer for around 2 years now, successfully creating a 2D platform game and various game programming related utilities and wrappers, though recently I have started to program in 3D so I''m guessing I''m a level 3 programmer.

Ive made one serious game (ZeroOne) which I may sell on the web as shareware, and a few small games similar to scorched earth and tetris which are decomposing on a CDR somewhere. I started with QBasic about 5yrs ago, then migrated to C++ about 3yrs ago due to the fact that QBasic is well, too basic.

I'm gonna say I'm a about a 1.5, I'm just starting out with some larger 2D platform games, but I've got plenty of years of "non-game" related programming behind me. I really have no asperation to work on any full-blown 3D games (like: Valve's Half-Life or Eidios' Tomb Raider) but I would love to integrate the technology into a 2D style game (like: Capcom's Strider 2 or the never released Ghosts'n Goblins 2000 by RetroFX).

What about level "H"? Hobbyists who are professional programmers, but not in the games industry; instead, they program games for a hobby. There''s a lot of us on here.

I don''t see the point of this, but I''ll answer you anyway: Level 2.825. Seriously. I''ve done software 3D and a ton of 2D, and am comfortable with DXG, so that makes me (approximately - the actual figure is an irrational number) 2.825.

I work on graphics programs in my spare time but I''m a professional programmer for Unisys Corp (3 years now). As a game programmer I''d say I am level 2 but I''d like to think my programming/design skills are at least level 3 or more

Considering the fact that I bought Sams Teach Yourself C++ in 21 Days less then a week ago (day 9!), and the only other book I''ve read is Sams Beginning Programming (24h)...
