90% of the indie community says "Hi!".
AAA games have had to try harder and harder to come up with ways to feel bigger and more impressive. Racing games went open world, shooters brought in RPG elements, platformers became "action" games, etc. You make a 20 million dollar game that can be described in a single word and you're likely going to find yourself in deep shit. It's just not marketable.
Meanwhile, indie development has gone the opposite direction. Most developers have realized that the average gamer can't handle complexity, ignores instruction and gets overwhelmed by innovation. The most typical solution is to take an innovative mechanic and just throw it on top of Super Mario Bros because the "platformer" is so basic and universally understood that it provides a comfortable entry point for people.
You can find a dozen new platformers everyday, you're just not going to find them coming in shiny $60 boxes.
What ever happened to platformer style games?
