Voice synthesis software

Hi all, I've been looking around online for a voice synthesizer to use for a project I'm working on, and thought I'd ask here also in case anyone had any suggestions. Here's what I'm looking for: 1. Relatively inexpensive (~$25 or less). 2. Windows and/or OS X. 3. Speech can be exported as audio. 4. License allows for use of exported audio in commercial products. 5. Speech quality doesn't have to be great (the audio will be heavily processed, and won't be used for natural dialogue or anything of that sort). Any suggestions or recommendations?
For that kind of budget, I'm not sure what you'll be able to find, especially if you want decent inflection and such. If you're wanting a robotic, sterile voice then Macs come with an app that does that for free. Perhaps you could also find something similar with google if you're on a PC.

Hi Nathan,

For this particular project, I don't really need high-quality synthesis (natural inflection and so on).

Basically I'm looking for something with decent quality (relative to the price, of course), and that allows for use of the generated audio in commercial products. I'm not sure if the Mac 'text to speech' functionality meets the latter criterion, but I'm looking into it.

Thanks for the reply :)
Try Festival, I remember looking at it ages ago and it seemed quite good, open source as well! :)

Thanks for the tip! I had skipped over Festival initially due to the build requirements (I'd hoped to find an out-of-the-box solution, just to save some development time), but I'll definitely take another look.

Thanks again :)
