Aye aye - there's something about flying in a swarm of other Tie Fighters and shooting down Y-Wings. I don't know if it was the great music or the fact that if you got hit more than once you were pretty much done for - but I still get chills everytime I think about that game.
I loved playing TIE Fighter. My favorite ship was the interceptor. Even though it had no shields, I liked having 4 lasers, and it could turn very well. Of course the TIE Defender was the best, but it always felt overpowered to me. I remember in X-Wing Alliance, when you are flying into the Death Star II, I didn't know you could should the pipes blocking your way. For the longest time I tried to pass the level by dodging them all.
When Star Wars Battlefront was announced, I was really excited, because I thought it would take the FPS from the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series and combine it with the flying from X-Wing/TIE Fighter. The flying in Battlefront was extremely disappointing.
Quote:Original post by ChurchSkiz It's got a lot more story then the other games. I also like the range of ships that you fly (alot of private ships with additional turrets that can be set to autofire). Gameplay wise I think it's the best one made, but it is probably the easiest of the series and tied the least into the movies (with the exception of the last mission which is the endor death star scene from return of the jedi).
I always thought the X-Wing Alliance story was kind of bad. The only thing it had going for it was the huge craft list and multiple areas. I always thought TIE Fighter was the best in terms of gameplay and story. I'd love to have a modern TIE Fighter 2 taking what was good out of X-Wing Alliance and giving it a good graphics engine.

I didn't say the story was better, just more of it. I liked tie fighter, especially the secondary objectives for the emperor. But alas, my heart will always be with x-wing. I played that game so much that one night I couldn't sleep because I would see tie fighters coming at me when I closed my eyes.

I really liked that part. Finally you could be one of those asshole TIE Interceptors that were really hard to hit in the x-wing game. Really loved pounding those x-wings from behind and laugh on the way out on their futile attempts at hitting your ship.
Btw. who designed the x-wing. It's lasers turret positioning is like the worst ever. If you get too close to your target, it becomes almost impossible to actually hit it with the lasers.

Blasphemy! X-wing design is my favorite of all the ships. Did you try linking the lasers differently? You can do 1,2,4 shots per fire (2 is my goto position or 4 for taking out Tie advanced or tie defenders) and also position them defensively or offensively. If you position them defensively they will fire closer to your cockpit.
Quote:Original post by necreia Nothing beats the trill of taking down a fleet of Star Destroyers with a Tie Advance and 4-unit wing.
That seems rather backwards. Why would TIEs be attacking SDs?

Interesting I don't remember that setting - was it in the original X-Wing game?
@Drathis you have to remember that the lasers are set to converge a certain distance from the nose of the ship - they don't all shoot straight out. So being close to a target can indeed make it harder to hit cause your lasers will just bracket it if it's closer than the convergence. Nothing to do with game design, just realism.

I think so, can't find a copy of the manual so I can't verify. For sure it's in alliance.
