Flash Drive RAID Array?
I thought of the idea this evening, and did some googling on the subject.. It looks like some have done it, though in Linux.. it appears Windows can't do it right now.
I searched GameDev.net to make sure the topic hasn't been discussed.. and it doesn't seem to have been yet.
Has anyone else played with the idea of using an array of thumb drives in a RAID configuration?
All of the articles i came across talk of booting and running windows from the array (which i don't want to do anyway), and they all are looking for the same thing.. performance, speed, speed, performance. (which i don't care about).
I want to figure out a way to do a thumb drive array for data redundancy for my most important work files.
I have some very old SCSI drives that have been in a RAID 1 array for years.. and they are eventually going to croak..
I'd like to have a 4 drive array of 32GB drives (my old SCSI Drives are only 9GB! it's plenty for important files). I'm not looking to array my MP3 collection! Just code, 3D models, notes, important documents..
I'd love to see software that tells you when one of the drives total bad cells reaches a certain point.. you could just pull it out, and plug in a new one.. and continue on your way.
I guess i'm kind of rambling, but i thought i'd throw it out there..
The array would be a second drive on your system.. not the main drive running the OS.. one where you store your important files.
If you've had hard drives die on you, and if you've ever lost years of work.. you can understand how nice it would be to have near 100% peace of mind of your data integrity. After losing a decade of work after a drive crash.. having safe data is always on my mind.. CD's Scratch.. online services go out of business.. I'd like something i can keep going perpetually.. and thumb drives are the answer!
Anyway.. thanks for your time.
thumb drives can die just as well.
anything at the same place as your pc actually can.
just build an ordinary raid of what ever drives you want.
or better, get an external solution. i have a windows home server, which does internal automatic dublicating of data for savety, and you can still have a local copy on your own pc. it's a bit expensive, but quite easy to set up, and works.
i have all ssd's in my pcs and laptops, and the homeserver with two 1tb disks right now.
which ever system dies, my data won't.
but for that important data, how about getting an external usb disk / stick, making some copy of your data onto it, and send it to your parents / a friend, what ever. so even if your house burns down, you still have it all.
my personal idea is to set up a windows home server at our holiday appartment. then, i can sync my data onto it over the internet. our region is quite a bit earthquake dangered.
but it may be overkill.
raiding usb sticks won't really work. have tried to find info about it myself before.
you could instead synching usb sticks. get a synctool that does automatic syncing and just use multiple sticks?
btw, my home server: IKEA Home Server

If that's not the help you're after then you're going to have to explain the problem better than what you have. - joanusdmentia
