Cool thanks for the suggestions!
Recap:
- Dune + Subsequent Books By Herbert.
- Jurassic Park
- War Day
- Sphere
- The Art of War (Maybe, I'm Skeptical)
I might Skip out on Arthur C. Clark's books because I have a problem of suspension of disbelief when reading books. I'm fine with movies but books never really make me want to believe what I'm reading. Hence I really like well-researched fiction with some techno/scifi overtone (which is not overbearing). Don't get me started on Fantasy - I could barely get through a page of any D&D book (Even though I play D&D with friends and am designing a fantasy game based on the D20 ruleset).
What do you guys think of Tom Clancy's books (any similar writers like Patterson)? Are they genuinely though provoking and smart or just a bunch of BS hacked together over a weekend?

Dan Brown, although a favorite on the mass market, is pretty bad at using science fact in his books. They contain numerous errors - hence I try to stay away from writers like him.
Crichton's global warming denial book contains numerous errors. Review of Michael Crichton's State of Fear Unfortunately, Crichton presents a error-filled and distorted version of the Global Warming science, favoring views of the handful of contrarians that attack the consensus science of the IPCC.
At any rate, thumbs up for Dune and Arthur C. Clark as well.

I couldn't find Solaris at the book store near my house, but he is definitely on my list. Do you know which of his books are a must-have?

I've read Solaris and The Cyberiad. Don't forget to visit the library too.

I'm in the same boat as you, am not interested in suspension of disbelief. The book was written in the 1960's and it was written in responce to the cuban missle crises. It's about an alien invasion and that's all I'll say. If you enjoyed "war of the worlds" the movie, then I'd really recommend it. If even the new WOTW's was too much for you, then maybe pass on this one. But this one was written for political reasons.
NOt only that, but because it was written so long ago, the only technology he mentions is stuff we already have that is way better than what could have been envisioned during the 1960's. By far best Alien invasion book I've ever read, my favorite sci-fi to date. My favorite t.v Sci-fi show was Serenity, if that helps a bit.
