Unbelievable! The US defeated #1 ranked Spain in the Confederations Cup semi-final with a shut out. Last week the US team played horrible, losing to Italy 3-1 and Brazil 3-0 before turning it around to beat Egypt 3-0. Coupled with Brazil's 3-0 trouncing of Italy, the US squeaked into the semi-finals to play Spain today. I thought for sure that Spain would trounce the US but things didn't turn out that way. Altidore scored in the 27th minute to put the US up 1-0. Dempsey scored in the 74th minute to seal the deal 2-0. Spain fought like mad to get back into the game but the US back line held on to shut them out. This win puts and end to Spain's 15 game winning streak and 35 game unbeaten streak. Spain had not lost a game since 2006. What a stunner!

This was... soccer? (fútbol, that is)
Yes, it's about soccer. The Confederations Cup tournament is being played in South Africa. It's something of a warm up for next year's World Cup also to be played in South Africa. The US team was ranked #14. Spain was ranked #1. Today's US victory is a huge upset. google news: Spain v USA as it happened

I think it was a pretty good game. I don't think either team played too bad, so overall I'm happy :)
Spain like the Dutch always had a decent team, but has been plagued by weak results against other world class rivals, until recently. Hopefully it's not gonna be a set back to the old ways for them.

I like their style of football and I'd love to see them really perform for the oncoming world cup. The squad they have at the moment is as good as anyone else, especially going forward. The US did a great job to hold them back.

Spain has a great team. I would root for them if the US wasn't in the tournament.

I should also note that the US played with only 10 men for the last 10 minutes of the game. They red card was bunk. I think the refs wanted to give Spain a chance to make a comeback and keep their streaks going.

One bad thing about being argentinian is that one is supposed to care about soccer.

Good for USA. It was almost time they bring a male soccer team showing better performance than the female one.

Well, you have an awesome and under-supported rugby team who punch way above their weight. Go support them.

My team (Germany) lost to Spain in the Euro Cup last year so I'm rather pleased about this USA win over Spain.

I can't wait for the World Cup! I can't believe it's next year already.
