Hello, this thread is to list amazing video game songs and... Yeah, that's pretty much it. I really hope this helps inspire you guys out here and that I have helped in some way. [Edited by - Siberianhusky89 on June 17, 2009 3:48:22 PM]
Wow gw, appreciate the effort you went into coming up with the list & look forward to having a listen.

Regarding FF7, I think it was the characters that made the game great more than anything else . Cloud, Aeris etc, with the nostalgic music and moving scenes in the game. Some of the gameplay etc isn't so great, but it really does make me feel just as nostalgic thinking of that game, as some real moments in my life lol, as terrible as that sounds. It was amazing to me.

That's understandable. It's alright to feel that way about the game, just because it's overrated (At least, I believe so), doesn't make it a bad game. Anyhow, I have odd feelings toward the game. People give it more credit than it deserves in my opinion because personally, I don't think Final Fantasy was all that well known to alot of people (It was well known, just not as known as it was during the time of 7) and it was the first FF to many. Anyhow, your feelings are your own ^^ Thanks by the way, I worked really hard on this list, took me hours because some of the songs were a pain to find. If there's anything on there you want me to put up, I'll do so, just say the word.

Done and done. They should be listed now XD Thanks by the way, you reminded me of some of Silent Hill 1's songs which I was considering putting up there, but thought it wasn't good enough since they were just creepy sounds and such, but I finally decided 'screw it' and put em up there. Not to mention 2 songs on there that aren't horror ones and are badass.

Anyhow, I find it so subjective to what the best genre is... However... >.> Between you and me, I think that video game music is underrated quite frequently...
Chrono Cross - Intro
Chrono Cross - Another World

Final Fantasy 6 - Terra's Theme
Final Fantasy 6 - Intro
Final Fantasy 6 -...Um...everything lol.

Heheh, I love Quest 64. I make myself play that game (for nostalgia's sake - 'twas my first RPG) every year or so. I must've beaten the game seven times now. Try beating the game with no water magic, to make things more difficult. [smile]

Any particular reason why you have Chrono Trigger but no Chrono Cross? Personally, I don't think I've ever heard any game music better than Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger. Perhaps I'm just playing the wrong games.

Also, I've never played the game myself, but I've come across a few Phantasy Star Online songs and greatly enjoyed them. I wish Amazon sold the OST.

Link's Awakening: Ballad of the Wind Fish

Full 'Ballad of the Wind Fish' song

(Note: If you are looking for music to listen to while programming; I love this composer's work)

Well, as odd as it may sound, I actually hadn't gotten to play Chrono Cross before, which is very odd considering I've played video games back and forth and Chrono Cross being a popular game it is (Not to mention I rather liked Chrono Trigger), anyhow, I haven't really gotten to hear too much of the music from that. I did listen to the ones he listed just now and I think they were quite good. Though, I hope to make the list large in quality instead of quantity, which is why I skipped quite a few songs from Mystical Ninja, Final Fantasy 8, Metal Gear Solid (I'm a fan, but I restrained it to a much smaller list of, what in my opinion, is the best of MGS1), Chrono Trigger (I wanted to put the Zeal song, but I felt like it was too much), Silent Hill, and so on, however, if it's something new, I think everyone should have a listen.

There were exceptions of course, (Final Fantasy 8 actually being one since it did have a large list even if I wanted to add more) such as The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time which had many amazing scores and so on. Anyhow, Final Fantasy 8 had a pretty amazing score as well. I'll try to listen to more Chrono Cross tracks, however, I wish I could play the game because what makes those games so wonderful is the fact that when you're listening to it, you feel that nostalgia of what was happening during the song. It's a like a psychological response.

You've probably heard of that test with little Albert right? A psychological experiment for classical conditioning. Watson had created an experiment that had caused a baby (little Albert) to be afraid of little furry animals. At the same time when he showed the rat, he would have a sound activated that would scare little Albert and every time little Albert SAW the little white rat, he had been afraid. He eventually related that idea of a rat to anything white and furry, even a beard.

It's a similar thing. With the music that's to be made by the hands of you talented people, YOU can condition the player into remembering certain parts of a game. Every time I hear that song to Quest 64 (Melrode) while playing Quest 64, it makes me shed a tear because the song is just so heartfelt and it reminded me of back when I was younger.

When I hear Enclosure from Metal Gear Solid, I think about Sniper Wolf's death or if Meryl was to die, or... I won't ruin the last one. But you get the idea, you guys are as important as everyone else, you, just like them, make the game come alive. When I'm out there kicking ass with Ryu and I hear his song in the backround, I go like (This is MY stage and this is MY song! It's time for Ryu to kick some ass!) XD But I will put up some things here and there as well about particular music now and then.

Can I just point out that although I know this was done with the best intentions, uploading full recordings of game music to YouTube is a breach of copyright, and as such we shouldn't really be encouraging that on GameDev.net. I appreciate that there is no point pretending that YouTube is not already full of this stuff, or that musicians can't learn something from listening to them, but let's not be supporting the unauthorised distribution of music or any other game resource. This whole thread is a bit suspect as a result to be honest, but I'll leave it up to nsmadsen as to what he wants to do with it, if anything.
