Can a group of skilled people be able to create a game?
Its probably have been asked many times before me, but I don't know what to search to find relevant posts, so I'm starting my own.
I like to create ok. If I wouldn't be a programmer, I think I would like to be a film producer, or a writer, or musician. Those people can create new ideas, some of them can change point of view for some people.
But I'm a programmer and I like it, and in a topic of creation, game development seems to be the best area of computer science. But its not a one man thing like composer or writer, they can create something and contact with the right people to publish it (I'm not telling its easy, but agree with me that writing a book is easier than doing a full pc game, although not everyone can be a writer and its requires knowledge and skills).
What I want to know, if you take some amount of people, a skilled people, everyone is good at his area (a designer, a composer, a programmer, a modeler, a writer [sorry if I forgot someone]), they don't have to be professor or doctors, they can be people like me, that like to create things. So if you take those people, can they make a good game? A game that worth? I don't mean the next number one game, but a game that will be played by a bit more people than their friends. Or I'm wasting my time in this area?
[edit] I forgot to mention: those people probably won't be paid for their creation, they do it for fun (like most of the people here, I think). [/edit]
And please, comment only if you have something normal to say, if you think I'm retard/stupid/etc please do not comment (and if you really want to, you can PM me, but please keep this post clean).
Thank you.
I would love to change the world, but they won’t give me the source code.
Sure, people make games for fun all the time. You're in a forum full of such people [wink]

Heh cool, that's a positive start :)
But let me rephrase a bit. I agree, people make games for fun, but (I wasn't here for long time) I never a saw a successful game. I saw a few good projects in "Help Wanted" forum but as I know from my experience, most of them are just enthusiastic at the beginning and than everything collapses. By making a game I mean a full game, with music, storyline, graphics (unless its a text based game), and not remakes of pacman and etc (sorry if I offended someone, we all start with this, but I never saw a project that started and ended with a positive end [release], but again probably cause I didn't see them/missed them).

Check out some of the Development Journals that are featured every week on the news page (here's last week's). There are a lot of ongoing projects there, and quite a few of the people posting have finished one or more games. There's also the showcase which is worth browsing through.
And of course there are a few of us floating around who work for major studios and have contributed to very well-known games. I won't embarrass anyone by naming them, though [wink]

Games I've seen by members from here that I've been impressed with:
Morning's Wrath
Eternal Lands
Rumble Box
I know there's more but those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head

A group of skilled people can make a game, making games aren't difficulty now with the given access to technology, tools and information. Making something outstanding however will take more than a group of skilled people, rather it will take people passionate about creating great works and taking the risk to achieve it. Look for example at the demoscene, the best demos aren't just technically impressive but also posses great design and artwork which makes them memorable and standout from their peers.
Have passion for what you do, don't accept 2nd best and look for the same in others. That's the best way to create something great. Don't be afraid to take risk on gameplay, ideas or design, that is what separates the great works from the good ones, IMO.
Good Luck!
