Hello everyone, I was just wondering, when it comes to game art and design, what styles would be most common in games, or would look good, and what styles would suit which games. There's probably no set plan for art in games, but it would be nice to get a grip on what the art is going to look like. There is so many to choose from such as American Comic, Manga, Realistic, Cartoon just to name a few I have thought of. If a few people could please tell me about some types of art styles used in games, and maybe a link to some good examples of them, it would be welcomed with open arms. Cheers, -James-

The art style should be chosen based on which best creates the mood you want to create in your game and is popular with your target audience. For example, horror game + anime style usually = fail. Serious historical drama + gothic surrealism = no. Photorealistic + comedy = bleh. Dark muddy colorscheme + romance = weak.

The easiest approach is to pick an existing movie, cartoon, anime, game, or particular artist's works which you feel really express the atmosphere and attitude you want. Then use reference images from that to show the style you are looking for.
