try to get a 4:3 instead of 16:10,16:9
the area is larger (~6%) for the same number of diagonal inches

I guess it depends on your preference, but I much prefer 16:10 over 4:3. I can see alot more on the horizontal plane than vertically. It's also wide enough to fit two windows side-by-side without being cramped.

I have two 20" 16:10 Acer monitors. They are absolutely awesome.

You may want to check on ebay for a used one. I bought my 2nd one on ebay (the exact model was no longer sold new except for a ridiculous price) and was surprised at how good it was.
I've bought the new Vizio 26" monitor (Vizio VMM26F201) with 1920 x 1200 resolution for Christmas, it was on sale for $350. I like that it is a little bit taller than a typical widescreen 16:9 monitor. The picture is great, movies and games look amazing. It has HDMI as well. I don't do that much development at home anymore, so I only have a single screen setup. At work, however, I have three 19" 1600x1200 screens and it is great for coding (and probably really cheap with current price levels).
