preventing flies shitting on the screen
A can of open Pepsi right next to a lamp should do. I did this for wasps and those tiny little flies and it worked.

"umm... meat favoured Pepsi?"
based on some replies I think some ppl think that fly concentrations are relatively the same in their countries as in oz (nz is nowhere near as bad as this, well depends on the weather)
one thing we do have (and theyre worse since they bite, yes horseflys do also but u tend to only get a few at once) is sandflies

When my daughter was younger, we stocked bananas in the house, as she devoured them like nobody's business. The problem with this was, we started getting fruit flies.
We found a simple and effective trap method: place a bowl with something attractive to the flies nearby their swarming grounds, place thin plastic-wrap over the bowl, and use a fork to punch a few (5-10) holes in the wrap. The flies go in for the fruit, but don't know how to get back out. Eventually they die.
