I've gotta agree with what most replies have said... no big deal really. I guess it's nice to be there as an option for those who REALLY want to uninstall the browser.

But, as long as MS isn't restricting my ability to install whatever browser I want, I don't particularly care that they include the most popular browser on the internet with their OS.

So all we end up with, is Microsoft haters getting a false sense of 'victory'
And?

Quote: as well as increased customer support calls for any of the few computer manufacturers who remove IExplorer completely.
Well yeah, there'll be increased support calls anyway when people upgrade to a new version of the OS.

Well okay, cool. I can delete IE when I upgrade to Windows 7. Great. I guess.

If anything, I hope this shows just how pointless the argument about IE's irremovability has always been.

bingo...

I was anticipating at least one person would comment about how evil Microsoft well ignoring the fact their favorite OS does the same thing.

I for one have never seen anyone recommend Epiphany or Konqueror. Since I've never used Epiphany I can't comment on it, however from my experince with konqueror my order for default browsers on Linux goes.

1. Firefox,
2 Lynx,
3. reboot the system to windows and use the first one from this list:
Chrome
Firefox
Opera
Safari
IE,
4. find another computer and go through the above list,
5. avoid the web,
6. Repeat steps 1-5
7 Konqueror.

o_O

1. I use Konqueror because it's conveniently built into the file manager
2. Opera because it's I like the Oxis skin and its fast and good and stuff

Well due to the fact that I'll be able to save 4mb I can now store my files on my computer and not have to go on the internet to get them. </sarcasm>
Just me
What's the point of this anyway? Microsoft doesn't (so far as I know) sell IE, Mozilla doesn't sell Firefox, and even Opera is free.

Seems like the only upshot is that a small amount of the people who don't care what browser they use will click on the orange fox instead of the blue e to get to the internet.

Ta-da. [smile]
How does MS even make money on IE? Does it really cost extra or is it bundled with the OS?

Or does having msn.com as the default homepage really bring in that much money?

Business is not always about making money yourself - sometimes it's about stopping your competitors from making money.

Personally I'm sure that's not enough, OS X can come with Safari and most Linux distros come with firefox as the only useful options. However until windows comes with firefox, or maybe chrome Microsoft would be to anti-competitive
I was trying to think of a way to sugarcoat this, but I'm just going to come out with it.

I have no idea what the hell you just said, let alone what your point might be.

(Also, good luck finding a significant Linux distro that installs GNOME but not Epiphany, or KDE but not Konqueror.)

oh good, so it's not just me and my predilection for drink.

Err, Ubuntu? :p

I don't get the backlash against the idea of removing IE. At the very least, it takes care of the biggest complaint the browser. I don't doubt people will find something else to whine about - they always do! - but, frankly, it's brilliant idea that costs Microsoft next to nothing.

Yes but its competitors don't sell their browsers. I view MS make money from IE because it makes the OS better if it comes with an internet browser installed; it also allows them to force new technologies on the web by making them de facto standards.
