Hi, I was just wondering if anyone has used DarkBasic before and if it is any good. You see I don''t like using DOS anymore and I don''t like really programming in Windows ... well Direct X really... I heard that DarkBasic combines the simplicity of the BASIC langauge with DirectX and makes it easier to code Windows games... is this true in your opinion. I want honest opinions before I consider buying the full version which is about £50 ($75.. I think) Dark Star UK

Well, i''ve used that. i''t spretty easy to learn but i hate the compiler , it''s SLOW. If you don''t want to be a programmer in the future just as hobby buy that and make some games with it. Else buy something like borland c++ builder or Visual C++.

That''s my opinion about it !!

Its actually not all that bad. I''ve done nothing serious with it, but its pretty good. Several gripes, though: -

- The GUI is HORRIBLE. Luckily, there is a freeware third-party editor called DarkEdit, which is much better.
- No network or multiplayer support as yet, although it is in the works.
- Its BASIC.

I imagine that the group will add more features and such as time goes on. As the previous poster said, very good if you just want to make games as a hobby. Pretty useless for learning about "real" coding.

Why the rookies don''t like C/C++?

It is the only language usable for game programming, it is very simple, fast, portable and everybody use it!

Pascal, Basic, python and other suxxx!

I''d recommend Blitzbasic www.blitzbasic.com.
It''s 2D at the moment but the 3D version is out
in September. It''s way faster than Darkbasic and
a lot of DB users have changed over to it.
You can find plenty of game demos here

Wow. I haven''t seen that since my Amiga days. I''ll have to check it out.
