Quote: Original post by zedzWhat is a "consumer rights organization"? I'm not sure, but I don't think we have one of those. We have a "Federal Communications Commission" which does things like fine people for saying bad words on TV, but I don't think that's quite the same thing.
if youre so het up about it, complain to the consumer rights organisation in your country,
it happens all the time
eg here in nz the largest retail chain got fined a couple of days ago for false advertising
Is anyone else bugged by Apple's claim that MacBook Air is thinnest in the world?

In the US advertising is regulated by the Federal Trade Commission, which also has a Bureau of Consumer Protection, itself with a Division of Advertising Practices:
Quote: The Division of Advertising Practices protects consumers from unfair or deceptive advertising and marketing practices that raise health and safety concerns, as well as those that cause economic injury. It brings law enforcement actions in federal district court to stop fraudulent advertising practices, coordinates FTC actions with federal and international law enforcement agencies sharing authority over health and safety products and services, and monitors advertising and marketing of alcohol, tobacco, violent entertainment media, and food to children. The Division also brings administrative lawsuits to stop unfair and deceptive advertising.
Here are their guidance documents on advertising.
It hardly seems worth the effort of complaining. I mean really, did someone lose a finger because Apple didn't keep track of all the obscure PC manufacturers on the market? Was someone damaged for more than $2000 because Apple lives under a rock in terms of market awareness? No one has been damaged, and Apple does have a bit of plausible deniability here.

Some places are not quite so accommodating.

I 100% disagree with article. If people were not misled by the exaggerated speed, then ads wouldn't exaggerate speed (and even tiny misled percent translates into huge profit). In general if for example models with larger than average hands weren't misleading people into believing that item X is smaller than it is, models with larger than average hands wouldn't be preferred for ads for products that have to look tiny, and so on a so forth.
It is better for everyone when ads are at least somewhat informative. Without banning ads like that, the speed as shown in ads has zero information content (very fast no matter what is truth). It hurts manufacturers too, not just customer.
(admittedly apple can say they exaggerate speed to fit into ad timeframe, though)
edit: damn autospellcheck.

When I read today's Dilbert comic I immediately thought of this thread.
