Setting up a "Digital Download" Store
Does anybody have experience setting up a webstore where they use digital distribution to sell their game? I'm looking into this, but could use some general advice and warnings of potential pitfalls. 1) Accepting Payment: Paypal seems to have pretty good rates for this, and it seems pretty easy to get started. Eventually I'd probably want to get a merchant account, but until things get going (i.e. until some reasonable level of money is coming in), Paypal should be fine. Thoughts? 2) Delivering Game: Here's where I'm a bit stuck. I've looked into e-junkie, and it looks pretty effective and affordable, at least as a way to get started. (And of course if a decent income stream is formed then more "expensive" options can be looked into). Anyone have experience with this? I must admit, though I like the pricing and that they seem to handle things for you, I would prefer a system like this (which I've seen but don't know how to securely set up): A user creates an account, can order games (paying through Paypal) on their account, and then the download links become available in their account. I've used stores like this and I really like the system. It's nice that you can easily re-download the game months later if you've reformatted or something. Of course, I have no idea how to protect against people's accounts being hacked or giving out their passwords all over the net. Thoughts? Are there any (extremely affordable -- currently shoestring budget) services like e-junkie that provide this model -- or will it have to wait until the business is generating some cash. 3) Hosting the Store: Any recommendation for hosting? I am in no position to set up my own server currently. Are there inexpensive options for hosting a secure store? I will very much appreciate advice on these matters. Also, if you're able to point me towards better places to look for such advice, that is helpful too (I had debated posting this in the Web Development section, but figured it might be more business oriented). Thanks!
Try over at Indiegamer, they cover the business side a lot more and have lists of E-Commerce providers.
