Genreless games

I just finished reading the latest PC Gamer and it had Warren Spector commenting on Deus Ex 2 (whoohoo!!) and Thief III (double whoohoo!!). He described them and not having an affiliation with any specific genre. What do you think? What makes a genreless game? has there ever been such a thing as a mmo adventure game? If not, why not?

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.
