Sports simulation

Hello everyone, I'm currently going through the design phase of a PBBG which will have the player take the role of a general manager for a hockey team. It will be the player's responsibility to sign/trade/draft new players and play against other players. I have a lot of the design work figured out, but the actual match simulation part is refusing to gain any traction in my head. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with sports simulations. I'm currently thinking that I will create an AI for how to play hockey and then set all the players loose and see what happens, which may be quite tricky. I have a system in place for how to determine the winner for an action, like an attacker trying to get around a defender, so maybe I can get away with a simple expansion on that. The other option I have is to just compare the skill of the two teams and then come up with a result that seems plausible, but I'd rather go with my original idea. Any ideas/help would be awesome.
Hi,

I asked a similar question in the game design forum, maybe you can find inspiration there.

Good thread, thanks a lot! This pretty much confirms what I thought about simming each player's actions. This is going to take a while :)
