Composing Using MIDI
Is it possible to use MIDI instruments to compose and have it come out sounding alright? Right now I only have Guitar Pro 5 at my disposal, and don't have the financial means to buy anything else.

MIDI is just a way of encoding musical note data. It has no intrinsic sound, as such. What you are probably referring to are the simple wavetable instruments that come with Windows or your sound card, which are responsible for playing back the MIDI information.
Sadly these sounds are generally limited in what you can achieve with them. In theory you can attempt to draw in nuances with MIDI messages for expression, volume, pitch bend and so on, but I don't think Guitar Pro allows this.
You may have some luck with a free SoundFont player and a free SoundFont such as Sinfonia, which is a small step up. I don't know how practical it is to use such SoundFont players however.
If you find yourself in a better financial position in the future, you can upgrade to a better sequencer and higher quality VST instruments to play back the MIDI, and you will be able to export your MIDI files from Guitar Pro for that purpose.
