Two Hands Are Better Than One

I am working on one of my projects which is a First Person game and I was just starting the controls for the game. I got around to the mouse and stopped there for a little bit. The thing is that all of the First Person games I have played never required you to think about what hand to do something with. So instead of just left-clicking something to pick it up you would click on said object with either the left or right mouse button and it would pick up the object with the respective hand. Seeing as this project actually allows limbs of the player to be essentially destroyed I was wondering how well this could work, seeing as the usual First Person game doesn't have control like that. Synopsis: Could it be a good idea to go against standard controls for the sake of gameplay?

I had considered a similar mechanic myself, I don't see it being a problem since it wouldn't disrupt the standard control scheme that much. One pressing issue though would be that it could be perceived as a meaningless mechanic, since many functions can already be handled quite easily with just a single click automatically using any available hand.

The idea of allowing limb destruction may not be such a good idea either as it caters to sadistic players (there was a thread somewhere that mentioned playtests with such a mechanic). In lieu of limb destruction, you could simply have the limb "impaired" somehow, such as increase CoF, or inability to use or hold certain items, etc.
