Caligari TrueSpace
How good is TrueSpace. I am designing a 3D engine and I am trying to map out the game content path. So I need tools for creating levels and models. So the biggest question being, does TrueSpace handle the .ase file format?
Parveen
Hmm I have Truespace 3, its not bad, but i dont remember if it supports .ase files. I''ll have to go home and check what all it suports since I dont have it with me here at work.
www.caligari.com might tell u what u need to know, I know version 4 (what i wish i had) supports everything up to import/export of .x files

The trial version comes on the "Tricks of The Windows Programming Gurus" CD.

trueSpace 5.1 30 day trial can be downloaded from caligari''s website. It can save .cob .can .asc .3ds .dxf .x object files. Sure there are some plug-ins available.
I''m just about to purchasing Hash animation Master within few days. It seems to have excellent resources for (game/engine)programmers.

Truespace is good for model design. Its a great vaule when you consider the others (MAX). As far as level design goes, I can''t realy say because I suck at that anyways ![](sad.gif)
The tsx plug in system is really easy to program for too. If you need a specific file format and you don''t mind the extra programming, there you go.
I have HASH Animation Master too. AM is geared toward character animtation. Another excellent value.

"You know you're obsessed with computer graphics when you're outside and you look up at the trees and think, "Wow! That's spectacular resolution!""
Howdy,
I only use TS because it is all I have...
The only complaint is its coordinate system
is Z-axis up. But this is an easy fix.
It is really easy to create your models from
its file format (.cob). Its format
supports hierarchies, so I have been able
to create animated bone models very
easy by creating the models and key frames
from it. I am sure other programs like
MAX are easy, but I have never had time
to try them out, and er..money.
One thing it is not good for is texturing
since it is made for rendering only. This
is forcing me to make my own Skinner, ughhh.
However, I can pull vertex and polygon
coloring out of it.
As far as making levels, I have done
several things with TS. One way is to
make brushes, like trees and walls, and
then position them all in TS. TSfs format
tells the position of the objects, so it is easy
to make BSPs are whatever you need from it.
Or you could create your own app to create
the TS objects after you make them. But once
again, you will need to texture it in another
app before you process any BSP trees, or
at least I highly suggest it.
