Number of polygons

How many polygons per mesh can I use to create a fluid animation, about 20 fps ? One human character only , walking in a simple 3d world, some walls covered with texture, nothing else. Pentium 3 1000, GeForce 2.0, 256 Mbyte, opengl
Our little engine currently does about 10,000 polys for the scene @ 140fps on similar hardware.

Ok, it took 70,000 polys to bring the fps down to 20. Those are static/scenery polys though (we don't have complex movement yet), and a single texture (no multi-pass).

I get 30 fps with a 45.000 triangles head on a similar hardware with opengl and non-static (= non AGP or videoram resident) meshes. With more static meshes a geforce2 can do 50.000-100.000 triangles with above 20 fps. Get a look on "power of 3d" section at www.nvidia.org for some demo pushing a geforce2 to the limit.

ops... www.nvidia.com, sorry!
