Hi, i want some sprites for a game i am working on. I would like a 2D sprite for the player and an accompanying preview image to display in the GUI when selecting a player. Here are the details: Size: Fairly big, at least 128x256 for the sprite and at least 256x256 for the preview. I want them big so i can play around with them and resize them to whatever i like without loosing detail. Theme: MechAssault style robot, futuristic. It's for a 2D side-scrolling game similar to worms. Resources: You can check out this 3D model and convert it to 2D. I would have done it but i can't open .max files. I quite like the name too. Colours: Robot colours, like silvers, blacks and greys. White (or light coloured) trimmings around the robot, legs, arms and on the body. I will colour these sections in the game (player can choose colour), see below for more info. Additional info: - Side view of the robot. - Preferably PNG format, or anything that supports transparency and can be opened in GIMP. - Arms as a seperate image or a seperate layer/frame if it's in GIF format. This is so i can rotate the arm as the player aims. - White trimmings (as mentioned above) as a seperate image or layer/frame. This is so i can apply special colouring in game (using OpenGL vertex colouring). Here is a diagram of how it works. - Animated. An animation of it walking and one of it jumping. The anim can be in GIF format although i will flatten it out into frames aligned on a grid (if you've seen GTA2's sprites) - The site mentioned above is a 3D model repository. I like the idea of making a 3D model then converting to 2D by taking screenshots or something, this makes it easier to move it around to get it the way you want and it will also be easy to make a cool preview image by getting a shot of it in a cool position. But you don't have to do it that way and i don't really want a 3D model. It's up to you. I am going to have a few different machines that the player can choose from, so I would like 4 or 5 different sprites if you are up to it but one will do for now. That's about it.

It doesn't seem like anyone wants to make some sprites so does anyone know where i can go to get some? Or is there a request forum here?

No one is willing to do this for you because:

  1. There is no proof that the effort put into your project will actually result into something playable. Many come here with big dreams, and many fail. You should post screenshots and a runnable demo of a solid and working engine, so be it if there's only placeholder art -- at least something which shows that you know what you're doing!

  2. This is largely a programming community. Most of us couldn't draw a stick even if our lives depended on it. Try a more art oriented community such as DeviantArt.

  3. You offer no compensation. If you were a talented artist, surely you wouldn't waste your time on free projects which doesn't even promise a place in the credits (and even that isn't going to help you get free artwork), when there are many ways to earn money for drawing. Not to say that there aren't artists that work for free, it's just that they aren't very common.

Address all these three issues, and I'm sure you will find what you're after.

That's a good idea, thanks. The only reason i was asking now is so i could get a feel for how it will look when it's completed, but placeholder art will do for the moment.

That's me alright! I have made a few backgrounds for my game but i am hopeless at characters and animation. I was thinking about a place like DeviantArt. That is why i asked if anyone knew of a place i could go to. Since i am just making my game as a hobby, i can't offer any compensation (i.e. money, i will put their name in the credits). I was hoping someone, if not here, would like to do this to help me, just for fun. I'm sure someone somewhere will be kind enough to help me :D

thanks for your advice.
