What is my idea of a GOOD rpg ?

Ok, to start out simple, I hate the usual crap, which includes gathering things, doing some stupid quests yada yada... I admit that I might be breaking the genre, but then again, aren''t games supposed to be fun ? so that people could play for pure fun ? Personally, I can''t find some sword (which grants me +2 attack, yee ) a reason to go 10000 km underground, kill 500000 icky monsters for that. Alrite, I admit I have an idea brewing in my mind and I am already working on my game. I don''t even try to assume that all people like the game. It will not be what is considered to be a traditional RPG... however I am not trying to be part of the mass, that makes games that fit into some specific genre. At this point I can again raise the issue of "shouldn''t games be fun". I''m making a rather different game without the usual cliché''s (hey, please don''t flame me because of my rather "twisted" opinion) like grand heros and "we have a happy ending yeee... the bad-ass is dead"... not to mention the usual "lets mix every mythology and epic saga and we have a great game". Again I admit that I''ve borrowed elements from other games, literature, movies and epic sagas BUT I have tried to create something that could be real... something you could experience and see. One thing that especially bugs me is creatures... Diablo II at least had some original and NEW creatures, and BG2 completely missed the train on giving players something truly NEW. I recently completed Baldur''s Gate II... and I must say that the story and game, especially the plot left me cold. I simply could not find the point in all that (boring) item acquiring and killing. I kinda sold the game after I had owned it for 5 days hehe... There is tons of stuff I hate in the modern RPG''s... that''s the main reason why I quit playing Diablo(s) and Baldur''s Gate(s)... I simply can''t believe people can''t even make excuses for all that mindless stealing/killing/ravaging... really lame don''t ya think ? Feel free to flame me... but at least try not to say I should go FAQ myself, but present me with your point of view. - A.J. Oja. - Lead Programmer/Project Leader DiMTEX Software

I''m totally with you, I thought both Diablo and BG were boring, and I haven''t played either sequel. Hope to see more unique rpgs soon, meanwhile I continue to play Shattered Galaxy, which is really more of an rts..

Good luck with your idea.

It was nice to see that someone was with me on this one. I am seeking to copyright my project and after then make it public. You all can check it out @ http://dimtex.cjb.net/ (when the site is done) and I''ll make all the entire manual of the game (including the story) available for download. I want to trust that no-one''s that cheap that he/she starts stealing ideas... there''s nothing more crappy than that. I was once working on a Half-Life Mod and ppl stole my damn ideas... so I had to abandon the project.
Anyway, this is a bit out of subject... keep posting me with your opinions.
Also, does anyone ever read the game manuals to get a picture on whats going on ?

Not to be one to speak for the whole Game Design forum, but I think you''ll find you''re preaching to the converted here. For me, especially, role playing and CRPGs mean a whole lot more than hack-n-slash, collect-the-items and gain-the-Magical-Sword-of-Majoniera-which-will-give-me-+20-strength. If you look at the posts in this forum especially, you''ll find that we are much more interested in simulating a world where role-playing is not about "killing goblins", but discovering and interacting with the universe and characters. There is great discussion about how to make an RPG which gives total freedom.

This is what MY idea of a good RPG is: an engrossing story, developed characters, a dynamic, changing world which is different each time you play it, a good control system, LONG gameplay that can be completed in short bursts..and a non-linear plot. I''m still dreaming, but it''s alright to dream, isn''t it?
Maybe its just that I have gotten older, maybe not, but it seems like modern RPGs have been lacking something. I can remeber the original Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior, those games kept me involved for days. After thinking about it, most RPG''s today dont really give you much in the form of quests. Everything seems to be laid out to where anybody can walk STRAIGHT through without any searching or exploring. Maybe its the way maps are laid out, but i think games today are created to linear. Even the original RPG''s had a little more freedom where you could go as long as you were strong enough, take the original Dragon Warrior for example, you were able to explore the entire world except for one island where the final boss was from the very beginning of the game, if you were strong enough. I agree RPG''s today seem less rewarding to play than they used to (refering to the original post about exploring 1000 levels of caves or something for a measly item. RPG''s seem to be in the same rut as FPS, no really new innovations, and really no improvements on old proven to work ideas. For RPG''s, and games in general, to get better, game design and develpoment control needs to be put back in the hands of gamers instead of the coporate monkeys that sell a game that makes millions and think that it will keep selling if they follow the same basic structure for the next game. I know people keep buying them and that doesnt help, but gamers dont really have a multitude of choice to choose from anymore. I am gonna be very interested to see your "non-mainstream RPG" to give me something to use my brain on, instead of just playing the same old formula. Resident Evil 1 for example, when that game first came out it was great. New idea, new genre, new way to play a game. Go to you local retailer today and count how many clones of it are out there now just for the reason some corporate monkey saw that someone else mad a lot of money off the idea. If you dont agree with me go back and play the old 8 and 16 bit games and tell me there wasnt a lot more variety of gameplay back then. All I have to say is bring on the new ideas and innovations and maybe games will become fun again.

Praetor Andreas, did i missed something, or you forgot to share your grand idea of a game in the your first post? We saw your complains about old concepts and stuff, and you keep saying that you are making "rather different" game, so different, that people are supposed to "flame" you about it, but I didn''t saw the smallest piece of idea in that post. Yet it provoked discussion. That''s the strangest thing in the Gamedev forums, but it happens all the time.

And do agree with Exile: you ARE preaching to the converted. Most of the posts around are about the Perfect cRPG and Ways to Achieve the Impossible Task of Creating It. Anyways, the show must go on...

Gee, optimistic, aintcha?

Praetor,
You may want to check out or contribute to the "Great ''Conventions which must go'' list" here in the forum. I''m sure we didn''t cover everything!

Ok, I''m gonna make a few more things clear right away. I will NOT share my idea, because I think I explained that people have been stealing ideas. I''m sorry to say this but I don''t trust most people. As for revealing my idea, I will do it when I get the world thing designed... its kinda difficult because the plot is not linear and basically, the way you play and interact with the characters "creates" the plot. Sort of...

Anyway, nice to see that my posts made an impact here. I am rather new to this place and I have only recently started posting here so I dunno about other discussions. My point was not in parroting what some other ppl might have said but to express my opinion on the rather pathetic state of todays commercial RPGs.

I''m also thinking of putting a discussion up on what people want to see in an RPG. What do you think people ?

Personally I''d like to see a combination of black & white and dungeon siege.

You start out in the world (with no bias) and you get to play as you want to... interact with the world as you want to.. etc. and the world that you live in changes because of you.

For example: if you were a gangster in a small crimeless town, you would attract other criminals... etc etc.

at least... I think it would be cool.
