Ok, so I''m working on this game and it uses PAK files... I use the PAK files similar to how Quake uses them... I''m sure everyone knows how it works... When you load a file, it looks in the directory structure and sees if the file exists outside of the PAK file, if it does exist it loads it from there, otherwise it loads it from the PAK file... You can even tell it to use one PAK file over another... I love this idea and it makes it really easy to make mods and adjustments to the game... Anyway, now that you''re all wowed by my ability to make a PAK reader (it''s not hard, really!), I was just wondering if I''m ALLOWED to use the PAK format... Is it under copyright or something? I''m wondering because I''ve never seen anyone use PAK files or anything similar before around here... I''m using the PAK1 format from Quake 1... I assume that it''s kosher because the Quake 1 source code has been released and stuff... but I was just wondering... and if it is ok to use PAK files, I suggest that you all go out and implement a PAK system in your game!! It''s so convienient!!! Jerec

Every file format is able to be used by anyone. The tools to make those files are not always freely usable, however.

PAK1 format? From what Ive seen, all quake engined games that use pak files are in the same format, and the ones that dont use PAK files that Ive seen are quake3 engined, and use PK3 (zip) files.
