What ever happened to...

Games like Ryzom and SEED. If you don't recognize those titles, I would encourage you to look them up. They both were miles ahead of any other MMO in terms of gameplay and originality. Unfortunately, they both died because no company would touch them. Ryzom allowed you to create your own completely custom spells! Both games gave you a world so completely different from any other MMO. SEED passed away quietly in the night, but with the most extremely loyal and helpful community I've ever seen. These games are exactly what I want, but they keep dying! These ideas... will they ever make it? Or will we have to wait for the mainstream games to accomplish them (At the glacier pace at which they are evolving).
MMOs cost money to run. Chances are, if they didn't get the funding, then there wasn't evidence of enough people wanting such a game. The market is not well known for demanding originality.
