is this undoable?
i was in science class one day when i got an idea for a game i think would be cool
here is the idea
the game puts u in the role of half scientist, half god
u are given the chance to make a new single cell organism by mixing and matching my idea of DNA( DNA in the game has different bases)
instead of A,T,G,C there will be S,B,H,R
u write some lines of genetic code for such things as; movement, shape, eukaryote or prokaryote.
after u are done u set ure creation loose in a little world. The longer it survives the more points u get( and maybe a new mutation)
after u get enough points u can move onto multi-cellular organisms!! (but then u have to make up new genetic code)
i want to do this game in text-only first so i can ready things for a graphical version
what do u guys think?
do u think a game like this is doable and/or worth the effort?
That actually sounds pretty interesting especially if you could have it adhere to science quite a bit.

i am in the process of writing the design doc now
do u have any suggestions or advice
i was thikin about how many different outcomes i should have
right now i could only think of 3 for shape, etc
and im not quite sure how i could randomize the whole thing

I think this would make a fairly cool toy if you could get some mix-and-match graphics going. There''s a website where you can breed mutant fruit flies that you might want to look at... well, now thay''re a pay-only site, but you can look at images from it here: http://vcourseware3.calstatela.edu/BLOL/FlyLab.html
Related is an old apple II game called Invisible Bugs, and there''s a shareware program floating around somewhere that lets the user breed fractal trees. None of them let the player genetically engineer things with code, though, so your idea''s still pretty original.

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.
I'm not 100% sure, but you can find at least 3 games with the same/similar idea at the Undergods. I personally played one of them several years ago. The major problem was the steep learning curve.
Oh, yes, it was Unnatural Selection, released by Maxis in '93. Look for it at the Underdogs, it'll come up with some similar games.
