This is written from the perspective of a character looking back at the beginning of the story before it happens, as he is about to let it unfold...I'd appreciate any and all feedback. Survival of the Fittest Steam/Cyber Punk setting. Post apocolypse. Ten years ago, a seismic travesty threw most of our world on its face, and brought what was left to its knees. Anarchy and confusion swept the lands, and destroyed us from the inside out trying to divulge what exactly had happened. There were rumors years and years ago, that volcanic activity and tectonic shifts were growing beyond our means to predict. The human response of course was simple; control it. Many of the world's leading financial powers stood their accounts back to back to fund the building of technology that could be used to buy us time, or even, so we heard to prevent our seemingly imminent demise. When it was succesful, the planet barely even knew, after all, it was a rumor right? The machines were built and drilling began to disrupt inevitable destruction at mantle level, nearly core level so we were told. The idea was to vacuum the energy into a concentrated area where little harm could be done, we harnessed the rift as it were, and then nothing happened... We wasted so much time and money in that great panic, just to see nothing. Or so we thought. Just when the monitoring of the operation became a backhanded job that no one cared about and people were done being afraid of 'nothing', it happened. We stood by helplessly and watched life as we knew it cripple and disintegrate before our very eyes. Some were saved, hundreds, here and there maybe. Who knows what was happening in other nations...we were all we had resources enough to worry about sadly. The military forces that survived trained more into service in an attempt to organize people and help them save themselves, by helping each other conserve food and energy. Hell, the only thing we had left to count on when we gave up on oil, was to reopen old coal deposits...so there we were fueling generators on raw power manufacturing electricity, and cooking over open fires like the homeless we used to laugh at.
(This is a little more I've put together...the following is what happened, but the details, i.e. most important parts, are extremely indefinate to the main character before he begins, his goal then becoming to get the real truth)

A boy is somehow able to be present at the workplace of his parents on the day that hell literally broke loose from the station created to harness the very geothermic energy being used to produce cheaper energy. As his mother and father are speaking when he sneaks in where he knows he should not be as they begin to argue. During the altercation, his mother strikes her husband, causing him to stumble over their son, into the framework of the machinery used to regulate the power and pressure levels. The damage done to the man's head in the fall knocks him unconscious, while the damage to the equipment causes a high alert and critical system failure, as multiple commands are entered and jammed into place all at once. The young boy looks helplessly to his mother, just before she pushes him out the door that has begun to close automatically. There is enough time for her to save herself as well, but not her husband, though she goes to him anyway, cradling him in her lap on the floor as she awaits the eventual suffocation that will slowly take them in the pressure sealed room. Nearby security scoops up the young boy, carrying him out hurriedly as another in the same uniform, begins to strike the tempered glass of the door with his baton. The boy loses sight of this guardas he is swept away into a crowd of evacuating people, who are being filtered into separated hallways.

The boy is told to stay close to a middle aged woman, and her daughter aged a little more then he. They are passed into a hall leading upward as they step eventually into filtered sunlight.

A very foggy version of this memory has haunted his dreams incomplete ever since. Even though he was placed under the care of a very wealthy old man, a chinese traditionalist with great wisdom, and a peculiar dress fashion resumed from a nearly forgotten time. This man has tried to clean up the boys attitude, and teach him patience. (Begin Game)

What exactly happens when the boy's father falls into the framework? I figured that it is what causes the world-wide destruction, but what actually happens?

Does the machine simply stop working and a massive earthquake occurs? Does the machine cause an earthquake? Maybe the factory explodes and whatever technology was used inside it pollutes the planet.

Do you have any idea's about the game itself?
