Blender vs. Maya???
Is there any way to tweak Blender to make it a full blown powerhouse of a modeller? I''ve been looking at a lot of Blender-made screenshots, but while they do look good, they all have a fleshless, amateur look to them. Is that all Blender can do? Come on.
1) How many polygons can Blender use in one scene?
2) How many polygons can Maya us in one scene? Truespace? 3dSMAX?
3) Maya has plugins like MayaCloth and stuff. Can that be made for Blender to make realistic water, clouds, clothes, etc.?
4) How expensive is Maya and how much power does it suck up?
1. not sure, but I''d say as many as you want (until your RAM runs out and your computer gets too slowed down to work with or just locks up)
2. Same.
3. Maybe, but I''ve never used Blender so I don''t know if you can make plugins for it. There is a cloth simulator out for tS though. Not as good as the professional ones, but it works for capes and stuff. Doesn''t work too well for clothes though.
4. Once again I''m not sure. Their site doesn''t tell how much it costs. You have to check their listings for a licensed seller of it and call them for the price, which means it must be really expensive. I''d guess 5-10 thousand. As for power, you have to have WinNT (I think 2K would work too), and probably 128MB RAM with a 500MHz or so processor and a 3D card would be fast enough, but the more polys you want, the more computer you''ll need.

DK Art (my site, which has little programming-related stuff on it, but you should go anyway^_^)

As many as your memory permits.
2) How many polygons can Maya us in one scene? Truespace? 3dSMAX?
Some less polygons because these programs use a lot more memory than Blender
3) Maya has plugins like MayaCloth and stuff. Can that be made for Blender to make realistic water, clouds, clothes, etc.?
Yes (search the site for the cloth plugin)
4) How expensive is Maya and how much power does it suck up?
Maya is too expensive for normal users![](sad.gif)
Why don''t you try Maya to see how much memory it needs?
Go to this page for having "a taste of Maya"
btw. You''ll need Win2K for it, Win98 is no option for Maya

I have Maya, albeit not through legal chanels
, and I can tell you that it takes a buttload of resources. It uses all 128megs of my RAM and then some, but man, is it ever sweet. I''m pretty sure that it''s more expensive than Softimage Extreme, which is $13,000. A damned expensive program.

This I really want to know: Why do all these "first class professionals" make products that could just as well sell for $500 USD or less, and sell them for over $5,000? That doesn''t make since.
Paint Shop Pro is just as good as Photoshop, really. Photoshop just has lots of extra features that I''ll probably never use.
Tell me Maya couldn''t sell for about $450 at Staples. Go ahead. Tell me. Tell me it wouldn''t sell even more than it does now. It would sell well like that, and recieve even higher ratings for the price.
People overcharge each other for crap, man. Kranomano probably knows what I''m talking about-- he''s from Oregon! I don''t know about the northern part of the state, but in the southern half, the utilities jip you out of all you got.
And to think it''s only going to get worse...

Hell yeah, they do!
I keep telling everyone, Paintshop is just as good as Photoshop, dammit! Nobody ever listens...

The publishers of these products know about and do nothing to stop piracy. They know that nearly 100% of piracy is by amateurs who are trying out and learning the products. When they go to work, though, they say, "I can use X product," and then their employer shells out the thousands of dollars, because they can. So really, it''s a win-win situation, except for the companies that buy the products, who generally get ripped off.
Maya is a Ferrari and that's why it is priced as such. The R&D in that product costs
a packet. If you want a bicycle then that is your choice.
We were early Maya users and paid through the nose but without us and the others who
bought it early we would not have the product we have today.
If the magic answer was to lower pricing then don't you think they would have done
that!!!
I can just see it now at the directors meeting within Alias. Let's drop the price to
$450 and we will sell bucketloads.
Jeesh why didnt they think of that.
Reason being is that it is a high end product which people rely on it for making
a living. It is not a high volume market and never will be. It is a niche market and not
aimed at amateurs

Did you get this one illegally as well? Tell you what the first thing you should do. Get rid of Maya on your machine right now.
People like you really piss me off.
I think Maya Unlimited (with Cloth, Fur, Subdivision Surfaces) costs $17.000. Maya Complete is a bit cheaper ($12.000 or so). But Maya offers the BEST student pricing. If you are a University Student you can get Maya Complete (without Fur/Cloth, etc..) for less than $300 (600 DM in Germany) .... with documentation (huge stacks of it) and all that nice stuff. You have to send them some paper that you are enroled every semester and you get updates, new licenses, etc... just like a ''real'' customer.
Now, that''s what I call cool,
