Does anyone know is thers anyway to preorder The linux ps2 devkit? Im really interested in buying one to start coding in the ps2.
So far you can''t. Unless you want to deal with learning Japanese. The thing is it''s only available in Japan, which sucks. Hopefully I''ll be able to start a big enough riot on Sony''s message boards too persuade them to release it sooner in the U.S.

Like the review says nobody knows wether or not it will come to the U.S. What I would like to see is that hard drive that they are going to sell, it would be nice if you can install any operating system on it, or a Microsoft operating system, just with less bugs (I WISH).... Anyway... I''ll post news about this subject when I find out more.

As it stands the PS2 linux kit is in beta form. It also requires the PC card slot (pcmcia) only available on Japanese PS2 systems. Putting Windows on the PS2 means microsoft has to port their code to the EE (probably would have to use sony''s gcc port too) which they will not do. Sony is too much of a competator to microsoft (handhelds, consoles). Getting your hands on a Japanese PS2 and a Sony PS2 linux kit is the hard part, you can always hire someone to translate the documentation for you.
The PS2 runs an embedded form of the linux kernel now. What''s in developement/being sold is a Dev Kit for it. Just wanted to mention that in case it wasn''t clear.

BTW, the DreamCast runs Windows CE with a DirectX implementation. It''s up to the hardware manufactors to decide exactly what gets implemented and how with CE. CE is more of a specification than an OS, but still tied to M$.
So CE w/Dx for the PS2 would not be technically impossible, though the word ''challenging'' seems insufficent.

My old roommate is Japaneese, and he goes back to the motherland once a year to visit his family... Maybe I''ll ask him to bring back a dev kit, instead of Saki (a rice whiskey that''s quite good) this year
