I feel I have been mislead?

A guy that worked at a retail chain told me that you can not program Open GL unless you have a compatible graphics card. Is this correct or have I been mislead? "There is humor in everything depending on which prespective you look from."

Oh you could still prolly program OGL no problems even without a 3D accelerator,but I don''t think you''d like what you''ll see.It will all be rendered in software mode.Someone correct me if I''m wrong :p

Your worst case scenario would be if your video card didn't provide hardware acceleration for opengl. At that point, the drivers would still use software emulation. It's not nearly as fast (or pretty), but that's not a problem if you're not doing anything demanding. (i.e. learning opengl)

You just need to d/l the drivers for the graphics cards to be able to run OpenGL
