I wouldn't call bread and butter stuff, more of, "I have just been through 60 CVs and they all have marines or space ships or generic monsters, why can't someone do something different !?!?". The usual reason is that they are assigned as projects at University so everyone does it.

Different is what makes you stand out from a sea of CVs which is precisely what you want to do.
