WASD + Isometric = 2 keys to move 'forward'

I prefer the type of isometric which is like a chessboard, with a flat side toward the viewer rather than the point of the diamond.

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.

So you guys are suggesting an alternative would be to use the mouse to aim, and have the character's movement controls become oriented with the direction the character is aiming? That would be an incredibly easy option to add to the game. One checkbox, and one vector rotation in fact. I hadn't actually thought of trying that. I wonder if I should add two seperate options to allow enabling it for combat and non-combat control?

The only thing restricting the game to an isometric view (diamond or otherwise) are bindable keys that rotate the camera by 90 degrees. There are also unbinded (by default) keys to rotate by 45 degrees at a time, and also keys to rotate smoothly over time as the control is held down. So it's up to the player.

I've decided against the extra checkbox. I also plan to remove a few I already have. I think I'm going to cram it all into one option with multiple schemes. Here are the three I have so far - well, four, counting the double isometrics:

- Third Person (Default)
Up is always up, left is left. Simple.

- First Person
Movement is oriented to be relative to the direction the mouse is pointed. Up represents forward, toward the target.

- Isometric (Left) and Isometric (Right)
Like Third Person, but up is angled to the left (or right) by 45 degrees.

I want to be careful not to add schemes that will give some type of significant gameplay advantage over the others, but I'm open to suggestions if anyone has some type of preference they would want to use. These are the only three I can think up.
