2D Images with 3D packages?

For what it's worth, I'm nearly certain that every sprite in Symphony of the Night (and all the other 2D Castlevanias, for that matter) was done by hand. If nothing else, Symphony of the Night was released in 1997, when making that many detailed models would have been prohibitively expensive in time and computing power.
