Is Z just enough?

Is sorting all the polys to the viewport (both x, y, and z cases) and then using Z buffering to render the polys fast enough? This method was used by John De Goes in his Cutting Edge 3D book. I played his demo and it seem fast enough, though it was in mode13h 8 bit color.
