After using Win2k for some time, I noticed that 548 kB bytes is missing from the total system memory. I pressed windows+pause keys to bring up the OS,CPU and memory info and I get something like 261596 kB RAM. shouldn''t that be 262144 KB instead? I tried with one stick and still I get 548 kB byte difference. Total physical memory in Task Manager is 261596 kB too. Is there something wrong with my system? -Xt.
Yes! There are kangaroos in Australia but I haven't seen them...yet
No, I don''t think there''s anything wrong with your system. I''m missing 450k myself. I''m not sure what causes it, though ...

It''s memory used by the NT Kernel.
Interesting, my discrepensy is 532K (524,288 - 523,756)...

There''s bound to be an explination for this...could be as simple as the RAM amounts you buy are just close estimates...

Does it really matter?
Either something really low level is stored there, or when they make RAM, they approximate.

Either way, you certainly have no reason to worry, that is 1/3 the size of a floppy disk!

Or it could be a 500K+ virus. That might make it the fattest, baddest, biggest, meanest, stealthiest, deadliest, widely spread virus in the world.

Its more likly to be a Microsoft stealth program recording information on you system and what you do then posts it back to Micro(spy)soft so they can keep a record of you.

It''s memory used by the core kernel files, since as they cant be swapped out, theyre not listed as available physical memory
If they''re related to a file (virus or OS), why would our sizes be different?

My machine at work is only "missing" 460K...

If you have say, 128MB of RAM, then under the Task Manager, Physical Memory (Total) should read exactly 131072 kB not some other number. The BIOS correctly reads it as 131072 kB why not windows?
