Queens Rampage
Story:The white queen discovers the black queen has been cheating on her with the black queen. She goes breserk and starts attacking the black pieces. Gameplay: Third person squad shooter with a twist. The enviroment is carved up into sectors (resembling a chessboard) There are the various character types: pawn, knight, rook, bishop, queen, king. A unit can only fire its weapons if they have a charged weapon and the enemy is on a sector which is valid (according to chess rules). Units charge up there weapons by standing powering up on the sector, in which case they cant move. Units move in the regular fashion (not chess). What do you think?
I dream hard of helping people.
I rarely comment on game ideas on these forums but I have to say I really like this one. It is not overly ambitious, is summed up easily very quickly, and combines two very familiar things in a novel way. I say go for it. I remember how popular "Battle Chess" was in the early 90's, and it was simply chess with some cute animations.
I never really comment on ideas either, but this sounds like it could be a lot of fun to play. A good game to play when you have some time to kill. Multiplayer would be a lot of fun.
I like the idea too, very cool. I have some questions though:
What happens if two units are in the same sector? Can they attack each other?
How big are the sectors? It seems like if they are big enough to make it fun, the Knight will be at a disadvantage since he can't attack adjacent sectors.

That brings up a disturbing mental picture... O_O
But, um... assuming you meant "The white queen discovers the white king cheating on her with the black queen", it sounds like a great idea. New, fresh, but simple. I like it. :)

You're looking at a wanna-be right now :P
You butchered my favorite game. I like it. Not quite sure about what you meant with chess combat - you mean that units can move one square in each direction but can only attack like the chess pieces attack? Ie. knight can only attack two squares +/- one sideways?
How about rooks as flying battleships that add to the defense value of pieces in nearby squares?

Its got a interesting hook. But if players are useing ranged weapons(guns, magic missles, etc.) I seriously doubt it will play even half as entertaining as it sounds.

I think a sort of third-person-"slasher" kind of thing would be best - you could play a pawn with a sword and then work your way up to rook (stomp on them!) or the king (bash them with the scepter!) or something like that.
I think ranged weapons are really the bane of third-person perspective. You get better maneuverability with third-person, but it's so dang hard to aim guns and crossbows and such.
