HEX MAP OPINIONS

I have been approached by a publisher to make a simple hex based version of a board game that I have been creating for a few years. It is a tactical battle system for ancient warfare. My question is what do the experts (you people in here) have to say about hexes and computer games. For board games there is really no alternative to measuring movement(that is easy to implement),but computers allow more freedom. On the other hand it is nice to now how far a unit can move in a turn to plan out your strategy.Or how quickly an opponent could reach you.I was a fan of the way Steel Panthers and Panzer General highlighted the area a unit could move but the hexes could be turned off and hidden, although this seems to still be hex based. Any ideas or opinions will be appreciated and I may be looking for help on this project if anyone here is interested.I will know more in the next week. thank you
I personally think tile maps suck. They seem so blocky and fake.
If anyone knows of a really good one I would like to see a shot of it.

I am going to have to say I like tile based games, but they''re gone and people dont want that anymore... Warhammer (a table top game) used inches of movement, which allowed it to be played anywhere on any table... still this is hard to do on a computer game. So, I suggest you use this system: in the greatest tactical rts net game (most units dont always win for once ^_^) NetStorm (By Activision), you place units that you cant move that attack, it measures range by a ring or a path around its boundries of attack when selected... try the demo of the game, its worth looking into, the game itself is great and the system might work for what you''re trying

Another alternative is to use a tile map for the static structures and terrain but let the moveable units wander around by pixel.
I would like a map of the earth somewhere in the scale of 1 inch equal to 40 miles(I am not sure of the pixel equivalent of 1 inch)would each tile then be an inch or would you make the tiles larger to comprise 2 or more of these imaginary 1 inch increments.I am a real novice in this area but I really would like some kind of uniform scale to keep everything straight.
At about 26000 miles around the Earth that is alot of tiles. On the bright side I guess many are just empty blue ocean.
Thanks Silver Abyss.I am not certain if your saying that units cant move in that game (if so it wont work I need lots of movement).I havent checked it out yet but ill try.I am familiar with Warhammer and my system blows it away. They have the cool miniatures on me though.I have recreated some huge historical battles on the desk and it even amazes me the way it duplicates historic outcomes if you follow the historic setups. If you change the setup the results will change too (though maybe not the outcome)I will cease my rambling now.
thanks
