Though I've only been using it for 2 minutes now, anyone interested in OO windows should definetly check out the "new" WTL. It was pre-released in January of 2000 with the platform SDK from then; I assume it's available from the Platform SDK download on msdn.micrsoft.com. WTL is template based OO for Win32. It does not provide the 'framework' that an MFC application does (which could be desirable for an MDI app) Check out the tutorial at WTL Tutorial @ CodeGuru Oh yeah, it's free-threading safe Magmai Kai Holmlor - The disgruntled & disillusioned Edited by - Magmai Kai Holmlor on April 28, 2001 1:34:37 AM Edited by - Magmai Kai Holmlor on April 28, 2001 1:34:53 AM

It certainly sounds an improvement. Now all they have to do is lose the disgusting Hungarian Notation...

Hey, that''s mean!!! You''re simply asking for an angry debate within an unrelated post.
VK
All this will probably be a mute point once WinForms and the new Win32 API is released with dotNET

hum, maybe they''ve already ditched it... I couldn''t find anything on msdn about it.

And I was just meant that you should take a look at the WTL. It saved me the hassle of creating my own classes.

Oh I completely agree and appreciate the nice link. I''ve been trying to use ATL''s WTL for awhile now because a) it produces smaller code and b) is a bit easier to work with in my opinion.

I wasn''t knocking you

How do you think C# will affect game programming? Do you think it will become the prefered language?
Now that is asking for an angry debate within an unrelated post!
Doesn''t look like M$ is ditching it, there''s a dedicated download for it on msdn now.

I forget how "new" can be such a relative term! I believe that the windows templates were introduced to ATL in version 3.0, but couldn''t say for certain. However, that time frame sounds about right. It feels like the library has been around for so long, its easy to forget the version was released a little over a year ago!

I tried browsing to the link you listed for codeguru, but i got the dreaded 404 error. So, I did a quick search and found:
Converting a Win32 Application to ATL", which is a condensed version of an article that used to be freely available from VCDJ. The author was either Richard Grimes or Bill Wagner. The only reason I mention it is there is more information in the artile regarding the "why''s and wherefore''s" that might be helpful.

Searching for CWindowImpl on MSDN will probably turn up more juicy tidbits of info.

I will keep trying the other document as long as there is coffee in my cup this am!

Thanks!
