Hello, I'm new here and I am really into gaming and music, so what better career than a sound designer? I was hoping that you maybe able to give me some advice... I ahve no idea where to start. How did you guys start? What equipment and knowledge do I need? Im currently doing a course in Music Technology and I have access to pro tools, logic and reaktor in college. But where can I gather experience, and how. Any advice, I would be thankful for.

There have been about a hundred million posts (approximately :D) dealing with this issue. Probably best to do a search on the forum. First things first though... a sound designer doesn't work with music, they work with everything audio that ISN'T music (although they often cross over). You may be the worlds best composer but you might suck at sound designing and vice versa.

Get yourself on a mod team or something, look in the 'help wanted' forum and use that as a learning experience.

Don't for a second think that the games industry is an 'easy option' though... as we're discussing in another thread, there are far too many composers out there for the amount of work, so you've got to be pretty special to make a living out of it... much like music for any media. (jeez, i really have to stop being such a downer on this site!)
