Sandbox theme
I've always loved the Dungeon Keeper / Evil Genius style of games. Not only because you play the bad guys, but also it's a sandbox game. I felt ripped off a lot while playing them as they were riddled with bugs. Now I'd love to make my own and see how I'd do, but I need a theme. The evil unseen overlord, with minions of the typical fantasy bad guys... and the 60's - 70's evil genius in sort of an austin powers world have been used up. I need a unique evil group that would fit into this kind of sandbox style of game.

i loved dungeon keeper. DK2 didnt have the same variety of creatures if i remember correctly. It was great training up your favourite creature, getting together a little party of guys and going behind enemy lines and sneaking into their dungeon heart.
Im still waiting for the RTS where you can control individual soldiers.

If you can control your own minions, what differentiates this from the typical RTS? For controllable characters, I'd either have something similar to the possession spell from DK2, or have a specific group of controllable units like the henchmen from Evil Genius. I'd probably combine the two to let you possess your special subrace or just use them RTS style, whichever you want maybe even both at the same time.

Please give me smarter minions then, or better ways to control them. They felt awfully stupid sometimes in Evil Genius, as organizing a proper defense was pretty tedious. Usually my minions attacked an overwhelming force all by their own, quickly dropping my minion count. Some organization within their ranks would be nice, where commanders can be given orders to keep their man together, etc. I mean, it's bad enough that I can't give my men orders to patrol the south beach on regular intervals... :P
In other words, I'm all in for less units to control, just as long as it doesn't make me loose my grip on the game.
Anyway, a theme. How about cannibalistic giants perhaps? or dreamland creatures, nightmares versus nice dreams. Actually, I'm reminded of a (Dutch) movie where there's a good, friendly giant that captures dreams in his cave, and gives nice dreams to children whenever he visits the human world. However, the other giants (with names like Bonecracker, etc.) also visit the human world, to eat children. Might be something.

wow. i had an idea for the game already, using a school playground or something, i would make it hilarious etc... but i really like the nighmares vs dreams idea.
as far as stupid units. I totally agree. DK2, they were smart enough i guess. Not enough of them for you to go crazy, but if you wanted, you could pick up your units and place them where you want..... EG.... AUG! I know what you mean. I don't know how many times I yelled and screamed. I don't know how i'll do in the AI department, but having commanders who essentially ensure that they travel in packs is a good idea.

That would be Roald Dahl's book, Small Friendly Giant. I didn't know it was a movie, but I'm not surprised.
To win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.
Demons in hell is probably too obvious and too religious. How about evil mermen living in a hidden atlantis building up to wipe out humans and sink the continents? Or evil dinotopia, you are dinosaurs plotting to get your world back from the mammals that stole it? Aliens (maybe ones smaller than humans, more like rats or chihuahuas) who want to conquer earth but have to capture and study humans to build up their anti-human gadgets tech tree, corrupt human women to make them bear alien offspring, etc.
It would be cool to do something like Katamari Damacy where each level is a larger scope, the final level being the whole planet.

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.

I didn't know it was translated into other languages. But yeah, not too surprizing really. :)
@sunandshadow: The Evil Alien Overlord is quite a stereotypical enemy, I kinda like that idea for this kind of game. :)

Hmm. I love these games! How about a mad doctor building a robot army? Maybe really big robots a la The Iron Giant could make an appearance... [smile]
Why specifically African children? They aren't the only ones working in sweatshops or otherwise being exploited. If anything it should be a mix of everyone.

So, you need settings?
Corporate world (been done, but not in this genre, I think), the player is an evil CEO that exploits African children
