I do not want to approach 3d with this game yet ... I want to first make a game like that and then move on to 3D.I will practise practise practise until I get something which is visually pleasant.

Many people are scared off by the decidedly non-windows look of The Gimp. At first I was too. But once I got the hang of it I realized just how terrible the Photoshop interface really is. It's all a matter of taste, some people would stomp their feet and scream that Photoshop r0XorZ and teh gimp sux, but use it for a while and see what you think.
I use both the latest version of Gimp and Photoshop 7.0 for my image editing needs =) I like both a lot but I'm slightly more fond of Photoshop just because it's what I started out with. Gimp definately has its advantages though.
