There is another alternative, touched on earlier by Numsgil.
Either re-write the functionality yourself, or perhaps get someone else to do it for you (depending upon specialisation of code, as mentioned).
Presumably, if it was straightforward to re-write it yourself, you would have done so already, instead of grappling with the GPL license (which I must admit never made easy reading for me).
So, have you considered getting someone else to do it, perhaps on the basis of some agreed remuneration if you make any money from your work? There are loads of potential pitfalls with doing this, but you may find someone who is prepared to do a bit of coding on the offchance of getting a modest sum for it in due course. I should have thought GameDev would be a good place to start looking.
