I have been looking around for a little while but did not see this posted anywhere before. I've been looking for game studios within the Atlanta area for a while now but have come up with very little. Unfortunately, doing a Google search does not provide many companies and sites like Monster generally have very few game related postings on them. I mostly just want to cut my teeth on a few projects before applying to some of the larger studios and to build up my resume/portfolio. What is the most effective way of finding game studios within a particular region? Google, sites like Gamasutra or the job listings here, et cetera.

Atlanta is not exactly a hot spot for game development, so you're not likely to find much. Most game development studios are concentrated along the west coast. Some in Texas and Chicago, and a small number on the northeast coast.

Offhand, I know of none in Georgia.

There are a few, found 2 companies on the job postings here located in Georgia. Due to circumstances at the time the first was posted I could not afford to change jobs and the second had already offered the job to someone when I sent in my resume. Georgia is going to be a growing game market in the upcoming years, the politicians are looking to promote it as a hot spot for game studios on the East coast.

I'll take a look at Gamasutra but I've checked gamejobs.com and they only had 3 positions listed in Atlanta and those were for writers/editors on ps3.com.

Edit: Also, I don't necessarily want to keep this thread about strictly the Atlanta area but to get ideas of what people can do wherever they are to find local game studios other than just trying to use google and hope they get lucky with their search parameters. Also, the chances are that there are a lot of local companies that don't use websites like gamedev, gamasutra, or gamejobs to post their jobs.

Most jobs in the industry are not filled from job postings; if you find a company you want to work for, and have the skillset, don't be afraid to send an email intro with a CV and link to your online portfolio. Even if they're not hiring right now, they'll file it away for when they are, but most companies are always looking for a few really talented juniors they can pick up and train.

You should also try attending your local IGDA chapter. In Georgia's case, they've incorporated into GGDA . Best place to network, meet other developers, and get the inside track on upcoming jobs.

Thanks for the great info. I'll definitely take a look into joining the GGDA. That map is amazing and is definitely a help for anyone interested in finding local game development companies to look at. Everyone keep the great tips coming, I think its time to update the first post with the tips given so far.
