Early Games Project Requires Ideas
Hello.
I am a keen programmer, eager to write a game. I have never written a game before but am looking for assistance. I need help with every aspect I can think of regarding making a game, but would like the assistance never the less:
Programming - I would like helpful and/or experienced programmers to give me some advice and guidance
Artwork - I would like some graphical assistance. Sprites etc.
Sound/Music - Not really bothered about for now, just need basics.
I am trying to make an RPG, I am learning step by step but hate reading tutorials. If people are willing to help, then I would want to keep in contact, to discuss ideas suggestions.
PS - If this message is one that I shouldn''t really post, I apologise and will someone let me know soon?
Thank-you for all constructive comments given
I hate to sound patronizing (w/e that means, ppl tend to use that word so w/e) but maybe u should start with tic tac toe? An RPG could easily take 10 000 to 50 000 lines of code depending on what ur actually trying to do. And that''s assuming ur gonna use a scripting language and stuff and just hard code ur engine.... Are u prepared to do that? No, honestly, are you? And you of course have a proper grip on DirectX, C++ (or whatever language u intend to use), proper OOP (well, okay, structured programming will work too, but OOP is really helpful for this type of game), numerous game programming techniques and tricks (there''s more to it than u think), the WinAPI, etc, right? If u do, by all means, good luck and i look forward to seeing ur RPG, else seriously, spare urself the agony of wasting two months and getting nowhere.
I''ve tried numerous large projects before i was rdy, and failed everytime. Oh well, live and learn![](wink.gif)

Thank-you for the reply, I am quite aware that a graphical RPG will take a little more than a few lines of code. I understand directX up to initialising a windows application, creating surfaces, fetching bitmaps and blitting them to the screen and clipping them surfaces using rects. I am not a complete stranger to large projects and have already written games like tic-tac-toe but would like to get my teeth into a larger project that others can also contribute to. If I don''t get further than moving a character around on screen and interacting with one other character, then at least I/we tried and can learn from what has been done. If it goes further then everyone learns and there is an end result..
Can only try can''t I?
Thank-you once again!

I am pretty much in the sama situation as you are....i have written all from small programs to quite complicated code implementing various algorithms and stuff...i am a student so ![](wink.gif)
any way, what i do now is that i have started to write an CRPG. I simply took a rule-book and started transtale it to the computer. Sound, grafix and musik i left to my friends who are more artistic than i am![](wink.gif)
i know it is ganna be hard and i know it is gonna take time...but no pain no gain right?
So my advice is just...start programming and once you get problem find a good book or an article about it and solv it![](smile.gif)
and keep up the good work![](smile.gif)
good luck and "no more tic-tac-toe"![](wink.gif)
