'How to do Buildings' Tutorials for 3D Studio Max
Hi All I have been using 3D Studio Max for a while, and I am designing a city scene for my 3D demo. Now I need to build my own city using 3D Studio, so I am keen to model my own buildings (high rise of the 21st century!). Does anybody know where I can find good tutorials for me to follow on this subject of building development and the general construction of 3D cities. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance... Regards Will

This isn't a tutorial as such, and it isn't even 3dsmax (I don't think), but I think it is a nice look into the process dgreen02 uses to get buildings into his game. [smile]

Hi ViLio
Thanks mate, thats helpful... Danny 'DGreen' Green has been a guy whose work ive been following for a long while looking forward to reading on his advice. The city he has constructed on Gang Wars (which i can't wait to play, its awe inspiring and looks excellent to play ;-D) are some, if not the best i've personally seen on any video game. I will look on that straight away...

I recommend the following tutorial: http://www.the3dstudio.com/product_details.aspx?id_product=10829
It involves Spline Modeling (best way for architecture, imo) for 3ds Max. You may have to register (free) for download.
Good luck, and there are many plugins for making cities (plugins that make life a lot easier). If you're interested...I recommend Greeble.
Cheers.

I have taken your advice and downloaded the tutorial about designing buildings with splines which was also invaluable... I tried to model the buildings through mesh deforming before, but splines are so much easier. Now im going to draw plans so i can go ahead on this. Now I am going to realise whats the best way to texture such things as the glass on windows, figure out if i use alpha-transparancy,etc... If anyone has any suggestion, the help would be gratefully appreciated
Thanks you guys for your help

Well if you're interested in glass windows and lighting, I always feel experience helps. Here is a (VIDEO) tutorial that goes through all of the steps to building a beautiful Church Window scene. http://3dquakers1.com/webroot5/download.php?det=19
Also, specific to architectural glass, http://www.cgarchitect.com/upclose/article31_TB.asp
I strongly recommend cgarchitect.com for their architectural modeling tutorals, but they are for the intermediate / advanced 3ds max user (not sure where you are on the skill scale).
Just for your information, the shot below is a render of my efforts on the Video tutorial, linked above from 3dquakers.com. It took me about 2-3 hours to do (long time ago, when I was quite inexperienced). I admit now, that it could use some chamfering, and some more detail. Also, the circle-part on top of the window is too small. If larger, it would look more realistic.
Good luck. Just PM me if you need more help.
