@nullguid: This isn''t really true. There are lots of German programmers who don''t know English, or don''t like to speak it. These are mostly wannabes though
It is completely untrue that everyone who uses the internet speaks English. This used to be true, but due to the invasion of "dumbed down" users (I really like the German term DAU, an abbreviation which translates to Stupidest Imaginable User), more and more people use the internet who can''t write a word of English (well, maybe "hello" ). All this global village stuff isn''t as global as it''s widely believed. Sad, but true...

French is more useful than German? Well, maybe because many people from France are so closed-minded about language (I''m not saying everybody is). I mean, many people in Germany don''t know French. But no German would go into a French bar and order a drink in German. It has happened the other way round though...

Ok now this might evolve into a discussion about what''s the better language... I think I should run away from this thread really quickly
Don''t take my views on the French language too seriously.

I think you made a mistake... shouldn''t it be

The Netherlands is the economic powerhouse of Europe and has fostered the development of some of the most preeminent corporations in the world

Hi Spartacus.

I''m from Denmark too.

As far as I know danish public schools must teach either german or french from 6th grade. So when you say that you have the opportunity to take german lessons, I assume that you already have french lessons at school. To get into the gymnasium (or htx, hhx or hf) you must have studied either german or french lectures in primary school. If you already have french lessons you won''t need german to get an education. And as far as I know you probably won''t need german after your education unless you want a job in the trading industry.

I''m in the 9th grade at the moment (only a couple of months left ). I started taking german lessons in the 6th grade. That is more than 2½ years ago now and I still can''t have a decent conversation in german (and neither can any of the others from my class). The reason for this is simple: No one speaks german outside the school. My parents don''t speak german, my friends don''t speak german and I never hear german when I watch TV or listen to the radio.
This makes german very hard to learn and very easy to forget.

No, I don''t think you should take those lessons. I can hardly imagine you ever needing it nor having any use for it.
German is my native language, and it is awful ;-) Here at Crytek in germany we have not a single artist / programmer that speaks German. So it is NOT necessary to get a good job ;-)

I don''t like the German language, it is much more complicated (overcomplicated) than most other languages. I don''t see ANY reason why you''ll ever need anything else than English...
