Specifically, I'm looking for a tool that has 3D "human character" models already loaded into it. All it has to be able to do is put these characters in any "humanly possible" position (ie., no broken necks, no unnaturally bent spine, etc...) It's needed to generate references for drawing in 2D... (foreshortening, perspective, etc...) ... more of an "artist's tool" than anything. Anything like this exist, currently? The models don't have to be nude... but it might help. Thank you very kindly :)

Poser ( a commercial product ) had a demo a few years ago.

I was disgusted to find that they DIDNT have joint angle limiters, and though
-- they charge money for this, and they dont even bother to have proper joint limiters ????? Thats pretty lame......

I'm moving this to the Visual Arts forum.
I'm not sure if this will help, but this site sure has a lot of different poses. It's worth a try I guess: http://www.3d.sk/?id=16&page=7

Hey, thanks. Just stumbled upon "Poser" myself... but you're right. You can't limit the joints? What happens when Sally's elbow bends the wrong way? Guess it just allows it? :(

Thanks mon.

Poser is your best bet... I would think the newest version (6 or 7?) has things like joint limitations/full body IK.

You may also be able to find some very roughly modelled and rigged placeholder models from turbosquid.com or something similar, or make your own in a 3D program.

EDIT: Also, video games are your friend... if you have HL2, go to the dev wiki and learn how to import/export... also, CoD2, or any game that is moddable normally has some sort of export plugin for 3ds or Maya.
