"The forum's dead, Jim"

It was said at it''s creation, and I''m saying it now, as it takes its last ragged breaths: "Do we really need a Game Writing forum?" And by the looks of things, we don''t. How about giving us some more space? "NPCs will be inherited from the basic Entity class. They will be fully independent, and carry out their own lives oblivious to the world around them ... that is, until you set them on fire ..." -- Merrick

Sadly, I am with morfe on this.

GDCorner is almost dead, and Writing is on Wavs life support. I think it would be best to let it rest with the remembrance of better days.

Even the lounge isn''t quite what it was in the days of lore, yore, and more... I can only hope that things start to get better as the year goes on.

Lay Writing to rest, and return like before to the realms of the GDCorner. *sob*

Bummer. Where else am I gonna get threads like this?

I remember when we first got here folks were promising articles on characterization, world-building, and dialog. What happened??!?!?! I was looking forward to them!

We should really consider what this forum is exactly for. What issues are there to talk about? Do we want to turn it into a place for posting samples? What about specific techniques? What about analysis of existing projects?

I''m not a booster for story-driven games, but I''d hate to see the forum just croak.

There were some good threads in here. Unfortunately, ''were'' being the operative word.

I love both the Writing & Design forums, but no one really seems to bother with this one anymore, since it is really just a sub-set of Design.

If you peeps can crank up the post count, that''s great. But you''d have to make it consistent, and that''s where this forum has trouble. It peaked and then took a nose dive.

And here we are. But as I said, and as did most people when this forum was first created, do we discuss anything in here that doesn''t belong just as well in Design?

As a show of support - here''s a post.

Unfortunately though, I don''t think there''s much I can contribute.

Sorry.
Hey guys, what''s the story with this forum. Why on Earth do you want to wipe it out ??? Why would you close it ?
It''s not because it''s not being hyper active at the moment that we should close it.
Inspiration is a cyclical thing. There are low periods just like now, but it doesnt make the whole forum a waste of hard drive !!!

If you start on this way, I''d say you take a closer look at the Game Art forum and look at the kind of "discussion" there ... I am sorry but it''s no better ... "What software is the best for this or that", "what is the best 3D package", yada yada !
I try to inject some discussion by doing my little tutorials once in a while, but the vast majority of discussions are still very lame

Now we do the same here, once in a while, here comes a cool topic. Let''s just keep cool about all this and wait for it to happen again. We''re not here to get results, nor to respect some quotas, we''re here ''cause we want to.

So let''s relax a little shall we, and leave this forum live its little life

youpla :-P

I''m still there, in the cyberspace... but busy
(sleeping and euh... sleeping )

I never really contributed to this forum cause I don''t know what to say in it, do you want me to give you all my Game MAster tricks I learnt during 10 years ?

I don''t want to close this forum, I''m just trying to get people to post here by preaching doom and gloom, and force a little life back into it. So you don''t want it closed, and I don''t either, but it will require than two or three main people to keep it going, so get those thinking caps on and start posting, alright?

I really don''t think this forum''s empty because writing is a subset of design. I think this forum is empty becaese:
1) gamedev has be down a lot in recent months
2) we''ve either reached consensus or agreed to disagree on the traditional controversies of writing for games.
3) I don''t know about everyone else on this one, but the questions I''ve had for years about writing have either been answered or I''ve given up on them (Can any of you explain to me what makes a psychologically satisfying plot? Or what''s worth writing? I thought not.)
4) Are any of us actually writing anything? I''ve written maybe 3 pages since Xmas, so what do I have to discuss?

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.

I''ve been waiting for you to turn up 8)

I agree with you that we seem to have covered everything we really need to from a Game Writing perspective, and all we really have left to discuss is each other''s work. Unfortunately, while many people did post in here, very few, are really Game Writers. Designers, yes, programmers, most likely, but there aren''t exacly hordes of Game Writers pleading for the existence of this forum.

And as to it being quiet since Christmas. Some forums are, true, while others are even more active than they were. It seems more so that people who have passed the dreaded n**bie stage have departed, and only those yet to graduate are left.

So how can we have a deep discussion about writing, or any decent writing for that matter, when there aren''t many people who have sat an English exam around?

As to what makes a psychologically satisfying plot ... well, I think that calls for another thread
